Puerto Galera, Philippines – Beauty Beyond Imagining!

November 7, 2011 by Anita

Brett Jankowiak asked:

It was not until I had been given my first San Miguel that I realised that this place was hot, humid and sticky. My first San Mig didn’t even touch the sides. I was back in Manila sitting at the bar in the hotel, after dropping off my bag and putting all my important documents in the safety deposit box. I took some time to reflect on my first visit to this incredibly diverse country.

When you discuss holiday destinations with people, the better trodden paths are the ones most frequented, not many people I know have traveled to the Philippines. Let me tell you, if you enjoy tropical islands with white powdery sand merging into the jungle on one side and then disappearing into the turquoise blue water on the other, then this is the place for you! After all there are 7,107 islands in the Philippines, take your pick!

The Philippines is the third largest English speaking country in the world, which makes getting around so much easier. Tourism has not really taken off like in neighboring Asian countries, like Thailand and Malaysia and the infrastructure is not quite there, which in a way makes it all the more exciting because your holiday will become an adventure, it can drag you down at times but once you arrive at your final destination the trip getting there will be long forgotten.

My journey took me to the resort town of Puerto Galera on the island of Mindoro. Puerto Galera is the port where Spanish Galleons use to take refuge from the might of the typhoons. Letting your imagination wonder a little as you glance around the port, you can almost see the Spanish Galleons swinging on their anchors.
Puerto Galera has recently won the 2005 Most Beautiful Bay in the World Award. It is easy to see why.

Getting to Puerto Galera

From Manila you need to take a bus to Batangas which takes approximately three hours, depending on the time of day and which day it is, the longest it has taken me was seven hours. From Batangas which is south of the Philippine capital of Manila you can catch a ferry across to Puerto Galera which is about an hour to an hour and half. The trip to Batangas is pretty uneventful, the real beauty starts when you get on the ferry. The water is a deep cobalt blue, if you are lucky you may even see dolphins, turtles and flying fish.

The Beaches

The majority of the resorts are centered around the beaches of Sabang, Small La Laguna and Big la Laguna. Sabang is where most of the action is, discos, pubs, restaurants and lots of accommodation. The next beach along is Small La Laguna which has more accommodation and the beach is quite nice. Make sure you stop off at the Point Bar which separates Sabang from Small La Laguna Beach the view is outstanding. Moving further away from Sabang you come to, in my opinion, the pick of the beaches, Big La Laguna Beach. The beach here is beautiful and it a lot quieter than Sabang, with some superior accommodation.

What to do in Puerto Galera?

The main focus here is the water. Scuba diving and snorkeling are the number one pursuits. The scuba diving is first class. There is no swell so swimming is safe, as are other water activities, sailing, windsurfing and kayaking.

Do try and get up to Ponderosa Golf Club for some jungle golf, lots of fun. Trekking is also available and do combine the trek to visit a Mangyan Village. Or you can just curl up on the beach with a good book!

Back to Reality

Pondering over my icy cold San Miguel, my first two week stay in these enchanted islands left me relaxed and ready to get back into the rat race of modern society. My first trip seemed like years ago, but I have visited and lived in this wonderful country on and off for a decade.

Samal Island – Mindanao’s Paradise

September 29, 2011 by Anita

Randy C. asked:

Long known to local residents, but largely a secret outside of the Philippines, Samal Island is poised to become a favored world wide destination. The newly developed upscale vacation resorts and high end residential subdivisions that line the gold coast of Samal are the cause for this current enthusiasm. Of course the beautiful white beaches, lush green tropical vegetation and multitude of adventure activities are what have provided the encouragement for all this development to begin with.

The Island Garden City of Samal, the official name for Samal Island, is just a RORO ferry or bangka ride from Davao City, the largest (geographically speaking) city in the Philippines. Surrounded by land and located in the heart of the Gulf of Davao, Samal Island is in a protected, virtually typhoon free zone. The weather therefore is typical of a tropical paradise, balmy with the usual downpour of rain in the evening to cool(?) things down.

There are nearly 40 resorts offering a wide range of comforts and luxuries on the island. To date the best known of the many Samal Island resorts would undoubtedly be Pearl Farm Beach Resort. This is a world class resort that has earned a well deserved reputation. It might have soon have competition, though. So much in fact that some wonder if this island can handle the rapid expansion that awaits it. Local government has stated that they are intent on the island keeping it’s garden namesake. That may be a difficult task, but one that is surely worth the effort.

Those looking for a vacation or retirement home also have many options. Large and medium sized residential subdivisions can be found from the northern tip of the island and continuing down all along the coast. Don’t expect bargain prices for these prime locations, but compared to a similar site here in the states (is there such a place?) the prices are very affordable. The subdivisions range from residential only to large complexes that include resorts, wellness centers and a marina. If those don’t meet your tastes, land is still available to purchase to build your own, more private dream home. Be aware though that a foreigner can not purchase land outright in the Philippines. If you are married to, or plan to marry, a Philippine citizen then the land must be titled in their name.

As to adventure, scuba diving remains extremely popular due to the magnificent marine life, luscious blue waters and beautiful coral reefs that encompass Samal Island. Water sports such as kayaking, water skiing, and windsurfing are also very popular activities to partake in. Mt. Puto, the highest peak on the island, allows for some challenging hiking and rappelling. For a more relaxed time, you can venture to such sites as the Monfort bat cave, one the various falls or possibly visit a historic site such as the Moncado White House.

What makes it all work is the feeling of relaxation with being away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. With no bridge connecting Samal Island to the larger cities, you really experience the tropical paradise feeling.

Bohol – One of Philippines Best Tourist Destinations

August 22, 2011 by Anita

Peter Garant asked:

Bohol, a small island in central Philippines, is known for the world famous and unique Chocolate Hills. It is one of the country’s most popular tourist spots. It’s true though that when most people think of Bohol, almost nothing else comes to mind. It might surprise you that it is more than the usual tourist spot and that there’s more to explore and to see in this island than those limestone hill formations.

Bohol is home to pristine beach shores. Panglao Island, just minutes away from the capital Tagbilaran, is increasingly gaining more popularity among local and foreign tourists as a more laid-back and tranquil beach destination alternative to Boracay.

But if you’re the kind who’s not satisfied with having a few dips in the water and taking in spectacular beachfront views, Bohol will certainly not disappoint. Scuba divers have more than enough choices of world class diving spots surrounding the island. Colorful coral reefs and rich marine life will surely satisfy all types of explorers, from novice snorkelers to expert divers.

Another popular attraction is dolphin and whale watching. Pamilacan Island is headquarters to the best spotters that arrange these tours. Most were former hunters who joined the dolphin and whale watching program after the Philippine government banned the killing of these marine mammals.

Bohol’s exotic wildlife is not limited underwater. The island’s last remaining forests protect unique fauna. It is home to one of the world’s smallest primates, the tarsier. You can visit the Philippine Tarsier Foundation in Corella and see the timid and peculiar animal in its natural habitat.

The Rajah Sikatuna National Park, a large forest reserve near Bilar, is a bird-watcher’s paradise. Treks along the trails throughout the park can lead you to an encounter with some of the country’s rare bird species.

Bohol is also a place rich with culture and history. Century-old churches in Baclayon, Loboc, Loay, Maribojoc, Loon and Dauis are a few of the standing monuments. And there are old Spanish watchtowers in Punta Cruz, Dauis, Panglao and Pamilacan.

If you want to keep away from the province’s usual tourist trail, you can travel along the less popular eastern side of the island. It has some of the most amazing coastlines, and secluded beaches, from the town of Anda in the southeast to the town of Talibon in the north.

Some of the towns in Bohol also offer community-based tours. Calape, Maribojoc and Candijay are among such towns. It is a great option to visit these towns’ protected mangrove areas and experience the quaint rural life in this part of the country. These tours showcase how resolute the locals are in preserving the island’s natural environment.

But to really experience Bohol is to experience the people’s hospitality. Try visiting the island in May when town fiestas are celebrated almost everyday. You can hop from town to town without having to bring money other than for transportation. You’d surely be invited to residents’ homes and enjoy feasts of lechon baboy (roasted pig) and kinilaw (raw fish).

Bohol is an island blessed with so much bounty and natural beauty. There’s no argument about that. What sets it apart from other tourist spots is that there’s so much to explore and so much to do that it’s actually pretty difficult to decide which one to do first. Of course, you can’t pass up a visit to the impressive Chocolate Hills. But staying overnight at this famous spot just to see stunning sunrise and sunset over the surreal landscape will be well worth it.

Cheap Flights To Manila, Philippines – Why Finding One Is Well Worth Your Time And Effort

Pedro Endo asked:

Philippines is a nice distinctive place to visit. With its tropical weather and excellent varieties of beaches and resorts, anyone would easily fall in love with this wonderful country located in the south eastern part of Asia.

My experience of stay in the Philippines makes me want to plan an immediate return for another vacation. If you are thinking of traveling to the Philippines, you should definitely be a little familiar with its main city capital called Manila. This is where you will most likely plan your flight arrival destination to end up at.

Finding cheap flights to Manila is not that easy, you need to do researching as well as planning ahead of time. Flights to other local airport destinations may not be cheaper since manila is the main capital of the country. So, almost all international flights are routed thru the city’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport, thus, more scheduled flights and much lesser expenses for airline companies.

However, Cebu Mactan International Airport has been gaining international flights already. At the time of this writing, they have 6 regular direct international flights. Taipei is the most recently added trip to their list of scheduled flights, and is scheduled for at least twice a week. It maybe a little expensive compared to a Manila flight, but if you intend to go anywhere near Cebu area like Bohol or somewhere around the Visayas region, then it would be a fairly good option to take advantage at. Another international Airport would be in Davao which has 3 international daily scheduled flights, to Singapore, to Koror Palau, and to Manado Indonesia.

Airfares are usually the most expensive part of a vacation trip, next to it would be hotel accommodations, this is why most of those who plan to visit the Philippines would surely want to go after those cheap flights to Manila. Nevertheless, once you arrive in the country, most of the things you will find there have adequately cheap prices, like food, transportation, souvenir items, clothing stuffs, and other accessories you may want to buy, way much cheaper compared to buying the same things from other countries.

Further more tips in finding cheap flights to Manila would be:

o Asking for quotations from travel agencies

o Surfing the internet to compare and get the best rates out there

o If you are from USA, then there are lots of Filipino agents selling cheap airfares to Manila, do try asking for them around your neighborhood

o Planning ahead on specific dates will give you bigger savings

o Most airlines offer huge discounts if booked earlier, but you must be sure about the schedule of your flight, otherwise you may end up getting charged for more should you request to cancel or change your flight schedule later on

o Some companies give discounts if you pay them via credit card, you should take advantage of such offer

o Other companies even accept travel mileage points to cover for your airfare

Allan Merin asked:

An interesting way to escape the hassles of urban living is to go camping on a weekend. With its abundant natural resources, the Philippines is a haven for travelers looking for a place to experience a traditional yet unforgettable outdoor recreation activity.

Camping is an affordable way to discover the beauty of this Southeast Asian nation, which is home to breathtaking tourist attractions, vibrant festivals, unspoiled beaches, and hip events. Going out in the wilds might be old-fashioned but still camping is still considered an effective way of relaxation.

What differentiates the Philippines from other nations deemed camping havens is that it is blessed with rich biodiversity. Covering a total land area of 299,764 square kilometers, the archipelago is surrounded by forests harboring exotic plants and animals. Selecting a perfect camping site in the Philippines is as easy as ABC. Here are some of the recommended camping destinations in the country. This travel guide contains information that will help you enjoy camping in the Philippines.

Palawan

A Palawan adventure is more than swimming and scuba diving. This island paradise in southern Luzon is also an ideal camping and trekking place because of its exotic forests. In Coron Island, visitors can spend a night or two living like a true “survivor.” Coron, which boasts of some of the best wreck diving sites in the country and Asia, is home to several resorts and vacation rentals providing wood cottages and secluded villas for campers.

Camiguin

Camigiun, one of the smallest provinces in the Philippines, has a big following of both local and foreign tourists, especially campers and adventurer seekers. Covering an area of 237.95 square kilometers, this island province in the southern region is frequented by travelers for its white beaches, waterfalls, and hot springs. Camiguin is also home to seven volcanoes and the Agohay Beach, which is famous for its magnificent sunset.

Batangas

Another renowned camping destination in the country is Batangas, which is just a few hours drive away from Manila. Its proximity to the metro makes this first-class province a magnet for travelers. Campers in the towns of Talisay and San Nicolas are treated with a great view of Taal Volcano, one of the most active in the Philippines. Beach resorts and vacation houses offering affordable camping services and accommodation rates are also abundant in the province.

Bohol

Apart from enjoying a magnificent view of the Chocolate Hills, tourists in Bohol can also enjoy a memorable and “green” camping adventure. The province, which is also the home of the Philippine tarsier, is the side of the Magsaysay Camp. Named after the late President Ramon Magsaysay, this sanctuary is surrounded by various tall tree species. Bohol is also home to the Bilarma Camp, which is known for its freshwater cascades.

Baguio

Ask expert travelers in the Philippines about an ideal camping site and they will most likely refer you to the “City of Pines.” Dubbed as the “Summer Capital of the Philippines,” Baguio has a cool weather all year round. The city, which is home to Camp John Hay, Burnham Park, and Mines View Park, brings visitors closer to the environment – the primary idea of camping.

Local Philippines is your travel buddy. We have information about the destinations, how to get there, what to do while in the area and more! Another booming outdoor recreation in the Philippines is kayaking. More and more people, including foreign tourists in the country, are getting hooked to this aquatic sport. With more than 7,000 islands, the Philippines is indeed a perfect destination for kayaking enthusiasts.

Recently, the Department of Tourism launched a program promoting kayaking as a way of exploring various travel destinations across the archipelago. Officials believe that kayaking can entice more international tourists to visit the Philippines, which is home to festive events and colorful festivals.

One thing that differentiates kayaking from other water sports is that it does not ruin our environment. One can move freely above crystal-clear waters or explore secret coves and inlets while enjoying fascinating views of the country’s various natural wonders such as mangrove forests, limestone cliffs, and unspoiled coastlines.

Kayaking experts said the sport is easy yet challenging. One just needs dexterity and sheer courage to cut across seas, lakes, and other bodies of water. Several resorts and vacation rentals in the country include kayaking in their holiday packages. Safety always comes first, as most accommodations ensure that their clients are equipped with proper gears and equipment when paddling across water.

India and the Philippines Together Account for 50% of the Offshore Bpo Market Currently

December 23, 2009 by Anita

Paul Young asked:

Growing at 46% annually since 2004, the US$6.8 billion Philippines’ offshore market today employs over 450,000 people, mostly for voice-based services. The Everest study, The Silent Knight: The Philippines’ Emerging Non-Voice BPO Capability, which includes contributions from the Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP), shows that the Philippines is now poised to emerge as an important destination for non-voice offshore BPO work for buyers looking beyond India to grow their offshoring footprint. It is noteworthy here that by 2012, the offshore BPO market will have an addressable opportunity of $220-280 billion, and as much as 90 percent of this addressable market opportunity will be in non-voice BPO services.

The Everest Research Institute study shows that while the scale of work is currently low, a number of providers are already leveraging the Philippines for a vast scope of non-voice functions. However, there remains limited awareness of the Philippines’ real capability in non-voice services, which has grown significantly over the past three years.

Says Nikhil Rajpal, Principal, Everest Group, “Success in voice-based BPO services has positioned the Philippines as the second largest low-cost BPO destination after India, and both countries combined account for 50 percent of the offshore BPO market in revenue terms. In non-voice BPO, most current activity and scale in the Philippines is concentrated on transactional services. Whereas almost all types of non-voice BPO functions are now being delivered from the Philippines, their maturity varies, so while we see relatively high activity and maturity in Finance & Accounting and transcription services, there has been only some activity recently in HRO, with even lesser in Procurement Services. Further, while there has been an increased traction in judgment-intensive knowledge services such as research, analytics and legal services, the scale and maturity remains low.”

The Filipino government is focused on development of the non-voice BPO industry, providing incentive programs to attract investors as well as providing grants and infrastructure developments.

Says Jimit Arora, Research Director, Everest Research Institute, “A number of factors are favoring the growth of non-voice BPO in the Philippines. These include acceptance as a key destination for customer service and support; competitive costs; sizable pool of English speaking talent; and a starting base of captives and suppliers. There is strong cultural similarity between the Philippines and the United States, making it easier for Filipino agents to relate toU.S. customers.”

“In terms of operating cost per employee for transactional back-office work, the Philippines offers about 75% and 70% respective savings over tier-II cities in UK and US, which is somewhat lesser savings as compared to India, but sizably more than other offshoring destinations like Monterrey (Mexico) and Prague (Czech Republic). Again, in terms of graduates per annum, at 480, 000, Philippines lags behind India’s 30, 00, 000, but is much ahead of Egypt, Argentina, South Africa and Mexico”, adds Jimit.

However, according to Nikhil, managing talent-related constraints will be critical to ensure operational success in the Philippines. He says, “Philippines will need to address four key talent-related challenges – scalability of entry-level talent; availability of specialized skills; availability and quality of managers; and migration of skilled talent.” Challenges regarding shortage of entry-level talent exist in India as well as the Philippines. According to the NASSCOM-Everest study, “Roadmap 2012 – Capitalizing on the Expanding BPO Landscape”, released last year, while the number of people required to support impending growth of BPO in India are available, unless the current focus on “ready-to-eat” talent is altered, the future growth may lead to a shortage of approximately one million entry-level graduates by 2012. However, availability of specialized skills, access to quality management talent, and talent migration are challenges that are much more pronounced in thePhilippines as compared to India.

Concludes Nikhil, “Given the nascent stage of the Philippines’ non-voice BPO market and prevailing talent-related challenges, the Philippines is unlikely to replace India as the leading non-voice BPO delivery location.” However, the Philippines can still serve as an important satellite delivery location for such services, and it is time the world starts taking note of its non-voice BPO delivery capabilities, he adds.
