Allan Merin asked:

Many are still looking for a one-stop travel destination where they can get closer to nature, enjoy the sun, soak into the water, do some exercises, try extreme sports, or relax at a world-class hotel. Search no more; for you need not go any farther than Camarines Sur to squeeze all of the above-mentioned activities in one memorable vacation.

Camarines Sur, the largest among the six provinces in Bicol Region, has cemented its place in the list of top travel destinations in the Philippines, thanks to the growing number of people hooked to extreme water sports. The province was not included in most Philippine travel guides until the Camarines Sur *********** Complex opened its doors to the public in May 2006. Since then, the six-hectare active park, which has facilities for wakeboarding, wakeskating, kneeboarding, and waterskiing, has buoyed the local tourism industry.

Politically subdivided into 35 municipalities and two cities, Camarines Sur is also a haven for beach bummers. One of the famous natural attractions in the province is the beaches of Caramoan, a second-class municipality perfectly made for island hopping. Its fine white sand beaches and crystal-clear waters are ideal for kayaking, snorkeling, and scuba diving. Other interesting activities popular for tourists are rock climbing, caving, camping, trekking, and mountain biking.

Camarines Sur, which is about eight to ten hours drive from Manila or 45 minutes by plane, is also a magnet for Catholic faithfuls. The province is home to Our Lady of Peñafrancia in Naga City. Come September, religious enthusiasts flock to the city for a religious festival wherein the image of the Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia is paraded on a float. Old churches are also a staple fare in the province. Some of them are the Naga Metropolitan Cathedral, Quipayo Church, and Nabua Ladrillo Church.

Like any province in the archipelago, Camarines Sur also has its own share of colorful events and festivals. In San Jose town, local talents and young artists take center stage for the Harana Festival. The February 11-15 event aims to promote cultural awareness through singing and other forms of arts. Other popular occasions in Camarines Sur include Iriga City’s Tinagba Festival, Bato’s Karanowan Festival, Minabalac’s Tumatarok Festival, and Nabua’s Boa-Boahan Festival.

The province, which accounted for 55.2% of the1.3 million people who set foot on Bicol last year, has also something to offer to hikers and sightseers. Two potentially active volcanoes- Mt. Isarog and Mt. Iriga – are home to exotic flora and fauna. Along the climb, don’t forget to check out Nabuntulan Falls and Malabsay Falls. Meanwhile, the recommended destinations for spelunkers are Kalupnitan Caves in Ilibmanan and Adiangao Cave in Presentacion.

Tourists can choose from various accommodations ranging from the very simple to the luxurious. As a travel tip, place your reservations in advance to avoid any inconvenience. There are hotels and resorts offering affordable vacation packages for the budget-conscious travelers. The crunchy pili nuts and the spicy Bicol Express are must-tries for first-time and repeat visitors.

Local Philippines is your travel buddy.

Caffeinated Content

Allan Merin asked:

If you’re idea of a relaxing vacation is exploring the rich cultural heritage of the Philippines, then visiting Vigan is the right place for you. This fifth-class city in the northern region allows tourists to travel back in time with its unique antiquity and idyllic atmosphere. Dubbed as “Heritage City of the North,” Vigan is described by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as the “best preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia.”

Vigan, which is roughly a nine-hour bus ride from Manila, is being groomed as the primary tourism destination in northern Philippines. To attract more local and foreign visitors, the government has been launching promotional activities such as various festivals and events over the past years. Hotels and vacation houses were also built in the city as part of projects aimed at improving the local hospitality industry.

Tourists will never get bored in Vigan. There are lots of tourist attractions to choose from in the city aside from the dozens of proudly standing ancestral houses. Here are some of them.

Calle Crisologo

Vigan is best known for Calle Crisologo, a 500-meter long street made from cobblestone. Its design is a mixture of 18th century Filipino and Spanish architecture. Feel the thrill of living during the Spanish era by riding a kalesa, or a horse-driven carriage. Calle Crisologo, where a number of movies and television shows depicting the Spanish times were shot, is also home to hotels, pension houses, restaurants, and souvenir shops.

Baluarte

Another must-visit place in Vigan is Baluarte. Covering an area of 80 hectares, this zoological park provides shelter to various animal species such as pythons, tigers, snakes, birds, ponies, and many more. Baluarte, which is owned by Ilocos Sur Gov. Luis “Chavit” Singson, also has a garden where different butterfly species are roaming around freely. Cameras are allowed inside Baluarte. And the best thing is admission is free.

St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral

St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral is an imposing structure situated at the heart of Vigan. Built by the Augustinians between 1790 and 1800, the church is famous for its unique “Earthquake Baroque” architecture. The cathedral, which is the site of various Catholic activities in Vigan, is frequented by pilgrims across the Philippines.

Crisologo Museum

If you are fond of various memorabilia, then you must enter the Crisologo Museum. This two-storey building located at the end of the Crisologo Street houses history exhibits, antique furniture, and literary collection. The car in which former Gov. Carmeling Crisologo was ambushed in 1961 is also displayed at the museum.

Longanisa Festival

One of the much-awaited events in Vigan is the Longanisa Festival. This annual event seeks to promote the local longanisa (native sausage) industry. The festival, which is celebrated on the third week of January, features street dancing, trade and food fairs, and various cultural exhibits. Longanisa is often served with fried rice and egg.

Apatot Beach

Vigan also has its share of fine beaches. One of them is Apatot Beach, a popular recreation site of local residents. This body of water is rich in historic past. At the end of World War II, the United States used Apatot Beach to unload armaments for American soldiers serving in the area.

Local Philippines is your travel buddy. We have information about the destinations, how to get there, what to do while in the area and more! Destinations in the beaches or in the mountains, destinations under water, destinations right at the middle of the urban hub, name it and Local Philippines will most likely feature it.

Caffeinated Content – Members-Only Content for WordPress

Peter Garant asked:

Known as one of the island provinces of the Philippines, Bohol is located at the Central Visayas region and is beside Cebu and Leyte. This province is one of the many attractive tourist destinations in the country. Like Boracay and Palawan, other tourist spots in the Philippines, Bohol also has many beautiful and fascinating resorts and beaches. Hence, it is reported that the tourism industry contributes a lot to the economic developments in the province.

Based on the 2000 census done at the province, there are 1,137,268 permanent residents in Bohol. The census also found that there are 209,588 households in the province with an average size of 5.41 people. The life expectancy in the province is greater than those in Negros Oriental and Siquijor which is 72.93 for women and 68.19 for men.

Most residents in the province speak Boholano, which is a Cebuano dialect. However, since migration is a constant trend in Bohol, there are also residents who use Chinese, English and Tagalog as their primary languages. In addition, some schools in the province taught Eskayan language to their students.

Each year the number of travelers who visit Bohol increases. This is due to the attractive tourist spots and natural wonders that can be found in the province. The famous formation of limestone called the Chocolate Hills are the most visited spot in Carmen. Meanwhile, many tourists also visit the popular rivers in the province which are the Loboc River and the Inabanga River.

Panglao Island in Bohol is famous for its white sand beaches. Along in these beaches are beautiful hotels and resorts where travelers and foreigners can stay and enjoy the sceneries. Travelers can also visit the Mag-aso falls, which is located at Antequera as well as the Bilar Mahogany Forest.

Travelers are encouraged to experience and have a glance at the festivals that are held in this attractive province. The Sandugo Festival, the Tagbilaran City Fiesta, the Bolibong Kingking Festival and Festival of Lights or SidlaKasilak are the renowned festivals in Bohol, Tourists who would witness these festivals will remember their stay and vacation at the province for the rest of their lives.

Transportation to Bohol is very easy since the province is very accessible. Tourists can travel by land, air and water. The national government of the Philippines established seaports and airports in the province so that travelers will not experience problems when it comes to visiting the beautiful island of Bohol.

Kansieo.com

Allan Merin asked:

The Bicol Region is one of the hottest travel destinations in the Philippines. Lying on the southeastern part of Luzon, Bicolandia combines natural wonders, fascinating attractions, good food, and hospitable people to attract visitors in and outside the archipelago of 7,107 islands. It is no wonder, then, that the region has been raking in huge amounts of money from the travel sector.

Bicol, comprising six provinces namely Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Masbate, and Sorsogon, has a lot to offer for discerning and demanding travelers. The local tourism industry thrives from the region’s beautiful beaches, colorful festivals, exquisite events, delightful cuisines, and rich cultural and historical heritage, among others.

Getting to Bicol is never a problem. There are many ways to reach this top-notch travel destination. It all depends on your budget, time, and preference. Dozens of bus lines have non-stop trips to Bicol. However, land travel from Manila will take around eight to ten hours. So if you willing to shell out more money, you can take a direct flight to the region. Travel time is less than an hour.

To guide you on your ultimate Bicol escapade, here is a list of the things to do while in Bicolandia.

Trekking and Sightseeing in Mayon Volcano

Probably the best way to kick off your Bicolandia adventure is to take a glimpse of the majestic Mayon Volcano in Albay. Towering over 2,400 feet above sea level, this active volcano has been the region’s identity. Its perfect conical shape makes it a favorite trekking destination for daredevils. But if you’re less adventurous, a sightseeing trip at the Cagsawa Church Ruins will do.

Whale Shark Watching in Donsol

The presence of whale sharks in Donsol waters has placed this municipality in Sorsogon on the international tourism map. The local government, in cooperation with resorts and divers associations, offers various packages that will get you up close and personal with these gentle giants, locally known as butanding. Aside from whale shark watching, tourists can also enjoy different water recreation activities such as diving, snorkeling, and kayaking.

Wakeboarding in CamSur

Take your Bicol vacation to new heights by going on a wakeboarding try in Camarines Sur. The CamSur *********** Complex in Pili is a mecca for wakeboarding and other water sports enthusiasts. This six-hectare property is complete with the finest and the latest amenities that will suit the need of the adventure seekers.

Get Wet and Wild in Caramoan

Fond of the hit reality television show “Survivor”? Then exploring the beauty of Caramoan Island is right for you. The island, which is isolated from the rest of Camarines Sur, is perfect for camping, rock climbing, kayaking, trekking, kite boarding, and mountain biking. The eighth-season of the French edition of “Survivor” was shot entirely on Caramoan Island.

Rev Up Your Spiritual Life in Naga

Located on the outskirts of the city is the Peñafrancia Basilica, the home of the miraculous image of the Patroness of Bicolandia, Nuestra Señora de Peñafrancia. Catholic faithfuls flock to Naga every September for a religious festival wherein the image of the Lady is placed on a barge while pilgrims riding smaller boats follow the procession in the river.

Try Bicol Express

A great way to wrap up your Bicol getaway is to indulge on the region’s sumptuous food, particularly Bicol Express. This popular Filipino dish, locally known as sinilihan, is a stew made from long chilies, coconut milk, shrimp paste, onion, pork, and garlic. With Bicol Express’ growing popularity, restaurants in and outside the region have started offering their own version of this really spicy dish.

Caffeinated Content for WordPress

Lopa Bhattacharya asked:

Philippines History:

From a long history of Western colonial rule, interspersed with the visits of merchants and traders, the 7,107 islands of Philippines today has evolved as a unique blend of the east and the west, both in appearance and culture. Today regarded as the third largest English speaking country in the world, the country has a rich history combining Asian, European, and American influences.

The Filipinos had a rich culture and were trading with the Chinese and the Japanese before the landmark event, Spanish colonization in 1521 altered the destiny of the island country. The Spanish colonization being a strong denominator in the history of Philippines, it brought about the construction of Intramuros, a “Walled City” comprised of European buildings and churches, replicated in different parts of the archipelago. A series of political rebellions then continued for as long as 350 years, at the end of which in 1898, the Filipinos succeeded in winning their independence. It is worth mentioning over here that this independence of the nation was fuelled by leaders like Jose Rizal and Emilio Aguinaldo.

1898 became a landmark year in the history of Philippines as in this year; Philippines became the first and only colony of the United States. However, The U.S. refused to recognize any Philippine right to self-government. As a result, Aguinaldo declared war against the United States for denying them independence on February 4, 1899. Following the Philippine-American War, the United States brought widespread education to the islands. Filipinos fought alongside Americans during World War II, particularly at the famous battle of Bataan and Corregidor which delayed Japanese advance and saved Australia. They then waged a guerilla war against the Japanese from 1941 to 1945. However, the country was able to regain its independence in 1946. In this way, the freedom-loving Filipinos have waged two peaceful, bloodless revolutions against what were perceived as corrupt regimes, resulting in the vibrant democracy of today’s Philippines. Today, there are as many as 12 English national newspapers, 7 national television stations, hundreds of cable TV stations, and 2,000 radio stations in Philippines, which ensures that democracy is restored to the country.

Philippines Economy:

Based on the agriculture industry, Philippines has gradually evolved today as one of the fastest growing economies in the whole of South East Asia. The service sector in Philippines is growing at a steady pace, keeping in tandem with the country’s phenomenal productivity in agriculture and industry.

Pimarily an agricultural region producing copra, maize, hemp, rice, sugar, and tobacco, the land of Philippines was also notable for mining activities as researches have found out that the mountains of the islands contain substantial amounts of chrome, copper, gold, iron, lead, manganese, and silver. Fishing, centered in Manila Bay and the Sulu Archipelago, has been yet another significant occupation, especially for the tribesmen scattered across the archipelago. However, the prospects of fishing as an industry like that of the agricultural and mining industry in Philippines is quite bleak, due to expensive funds and equipments. Important sectors of the Philippine economy, apart from agriculture, mining and fishing, include food processing, textiles and garments, and electronics and automobile parts.

While most industries of Philippines are concentrated in the urban areas around metropolitan Manila, natural gas resources have been discovered in recent times off the islands of Palawan, which are sure to add to the country’s substantial geothermal, hydro, and coal energy reserves.

Basically an agricultural economy with commerce, trade, and industry contributing to its growth and development, farming with the primary crops “palay” and “corn” and also minor crops like rootcrops, vegetables and fruits as well as cattle and swine raising are considered among the other major economic activities. Besides, the country’s oranges and mangoes are now major crops being exported fresh to Asian countries.

Philippines was less severely affected by the Asian financial crisis of 1998 than its neighbouring south-east asian countries like Singapore, Malaysia etc. This was possible because there were the annual remittances of $7-8 billion from overseas workers. Besides, no sustained runup in asset prices or foreign borrowing happened over here, prior to the crisis. Therefore, from a 0.6% decline in 1998, GDP expanded by 2.4% in 1999, and 4.4% in 2000. By the end of 2001, however, the country showed an economic slump in face of a global economic slowdown, but it soon recovered in the successive years, as GDP growth accelerated to 4.3% in 2002, 4.7% in 2003, and about 6% in 2004, reflecting the continued resilience of the service sector, and a much improved exports and agricultural output.
Despite all these facts and figures, Philippines’ high annual population growth rate and unequal distribution of income, its higher oil prices, higher interest rates on dollar borrowings, and higher inflation happen to be solid roadblocks to its consistent economic progress. Keeping these in mind, the government has to take a higher, sustained growth path to make appreciable progress of the economy.

Philippines Culture/Religion:

A true blend of culture where east synergizes with the west, Philippines has acquired a cultural character with a little bit of all the cultures put together. Divided geographically and culturally into regions, each regional group of the Filipinos is recognizable by distinct traits and dialects. The sturdy and frugal llocanos of the north, the industrious Tagalogs of the central plains, the carefree Visayans from the central islands, and the colorful tribesmen and religious Moslems of Mindanao, all speak distinct dialects of their own. In this way, Philippines has more than 111 dialects spoken, owing to the subdivisions of these basic regional and cultural groups. Housing Indonesian Malay people as well as some Chinese and Spanish elements, the country has been famous for its “Bayanihan” or spirit of kinship and camaraderie and hospitality that the Filipinos are said to acquire from their forefathers. The influence of the Chinese has incorporated in them the concept of close family relations, while the characteristic piousness comes from the Spaniards who introduced Christianity in the 16th century. Regarded amongst the English-proficient Oriental people, they have Pilipino as the official national language, while English is considered the country’s unofficial one. As a matter-of-fact, Philippines is currently the third-largest English speaking country in the world.

An integral part of the culture of the Filipinos, the “fiesta” is quite a cultural denominator of Philippines. The culture of the Filipinos indicates that good times or bad times, come what may, the fiesta must go on. Each city and barrio having at least one local festival of its own, (usually celebrating the feast of its patron saint), there is always a fiesta going on somewhere in the country. The most pompous and elaborate among all these is Christmas, a season which the fun-loving Filipinos celebrate with all pomp and pageantry one can imagine.
Speaking about religion, the Filipinos have historically embraced two of the great religions of the world – Islam and Christianity. Introduced during the 14th century, shortly after the expansion of Arab commercial ventures in Southeast Asia, today Islam in Philippines is limited to the southern region of the country. On the other hand, Christianity, which was introduced in the 16th century with the coming of Ferdinand Magellan in 1521, remains a predominant religion in the country with a large chunk of Catholics (82.9%) and a small number of Protestants (5.4%). Protestantism was introduced to the Philippines history much later (1889) by the first Presbyterian and Methodist missionaries arriving with American soldiers in the country.

The churches of Philippines, with their unique towering architecture, are landmarks in almost all important towns, provincial capitals, and major cities. As an important fact, two of the much prominent Filipino independent churches were organized at the turn of the century, namely, the ‘Aglipay Independent Church’ (founded in 1902) and the Iglesia Ni Kristo’ or ‘Church of Christ’ (founded in 1914). While the Aglipay has recently signed a covenant with the Anglican Church, the Iglesia ni Kristo has expanded its membership considerably.

Philippines Travel/Tourism:

With exotic beach destinations in Philippines like Boracay, Pagudpud, Mactan Island, Panglao, Camiguin and more, with a rare and exotic marine life adorned by flora and fauna, with an exciting range of water sports ranging from scuba-diving and snorkeling to sea kayaking and white water rafting, Philippines, along with its other neighbouring South-east Asian countries, happens to be a treasure trove for foreign tourists. As a matter-of-fact, the islands of the Philippines is said to be the most sought after wedding destination where traditional meets exotic, modern meets mythical and above all, east meets west.

Foreign tourists all over the globe vie with each other to experience the fabulous wedding packages at Shangri-la’s Mactan Island resorts. The Pansukian Tropical Resorts, on the other hand, are sought after every year with their offerings of enchanting honeymoon packages. And why not, for 7,107 islands, a coastline twice the length of that of the United States, the warm crystal blue waters of both the China Sea and the Pacific Ocean, the long, white sand beaches and a variety of marine life would be tempting enough for anyone in the world!

Philippines can also boast of a fascinating wildlife with a huge array of endangered endemic Philippine animals, including 108 African animals, man-eating Philippine crocodiles and the endangered “dugong”, or sea cow. The country can also boast of a spectacular marine life as the Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park of Philippines teems with coral species, coral genera, seagrass species, large marine life, dolphins, marine turtles; and seabirds. “The Bird Island of Central Philippines” is a critical stopover of up to 50,000 migrating water birds flying the East Asian migratory flyway yearly. Speaking of the distinctive beauty of the flora, there is the Ninoy Aquino Park and Wildlife Nature Center in Quezon Avenue, Philippines, that boasts of about 38 species of trees and shrubs, representing 2,443 trees commonly found in Philippine forests.

Besides, the idyllic settings of the Philippines’ make it a remarkable golfing destination for the elite and up market crowd. Gifted with unique golfing enclaves, from lush valleys to mountaintops, seaside resorts, or just within the cityscapes, Philippines can boast of proud sites of some of the world’s most prestigious international and local tournaments. These include the Johnnie Walker Classic, the World Amateur Golf Championships, the World Cup, The Asian PGA, and the Philippines Open. With all these attributes and much more, the country can very well be Asia’s Beach Capital in the true sense of the term.

Caffeinated Content

Allan Merin asked:

Exploring the beauty of the Philippines is always a thrill. This Southeast Asian nation has been making waves in the tourism industry with its wide selection of scenic spots, festive events, and breathtaking man-made and natural attractions.

Most travelers think that the Philippines is only akin to the beautiful beaches of Boracay and bargain-hunting and bar-hopping adventures in Metro Manila. But most people often missed out on exploring various tourist attractions in Mindanao. One of the leading travel destinations in the southern region is Davao, one of the country’s most progressive cities.

Covering an area of 943.6 square meters, Davao is the perfect place for travelers looking to experience an idyllic town setting at the comforts of a modern metropolis. The city, which is three times bigger than the entire Metro Manila, has a lot to offer. The “Land of Promise” is home to pristine beaches, beautiful diving spots, historical sites, and luxury resorts and hotels, among others. It’s no wonder, then, that Davao has all the trimmings of an ultimate Philippine vacation.

To guide you to your Davao trip, the author came up with a list of the must-see tourist attractions in the city.

Mt. Apo

Towering over 9,650 feet above sea level, Mt. Apo is the highest peak in the Philippines. This national park is a haven for birdwatchers, as it is home to more than 270 bird species. Mt. Apo is also considered an ideal hiking destination for the adventure-bound. Experts said scaling this volcanic mountain is not a technical one. It may take up to five days to reach the summit depending on your pace.

Philippine Eagle Center

Davao also allows tourists to get up close and personal with the country’s national bird, the Philippine Eagle. Situated in Malagos, the Philippine Eagle Center serves as temporary home and a breeding center for the critically endangered bird. The Philippine Eagle, one of the tallest and biggest birds in the world, usually feeds on flying lemurs, wild cats, and squirrels.

Kadayawan Festival

The perfect time to visit Davao would be August, when the city stages one of the most colorful festivals in the Philippines. Kadayawan Festival is an annual thanksgiving celebration for a bountiful harvest. Various activities, including street dancing, tribal parades, trade fairs, flower shows, and horse fight competitions, are lined up during the weeklong festival.

GAP Farming Orchard

You can also embark on a nature trip while in Davao. GAP Farming Orchard is a perfect place to escape city life and pollution. It has well-maintained cottages and camp sites, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and horseback riding facilities. Exotic flowers and tropical fruits can be found in the garden. A giant one-eyed monster confined in a tunnel built during the Japanese occupation is also a major attraction at the resort.

There are many other things to do in Davao. For adventure seekers, a visit to Camp Sabros in Mt. Apo or to Eden Nature Park for a thrilling zip line experience is a must. For those who love swimming and other water activities, go to Samal Island, which is famous for its white-sand beaches. A Davao adventure is never complete without tasting durian, a fruit famous for its unique odor and thorn-covered husk.

Reasons may include distance, lack of promotion, and uncertainty over safety.

Distance is certainly a consideration, as the trip is long (18 hours to Manila) and costly. A bargain fare ranges from $1000 to $1800 depending on the season, the carrier, and how good a shopper the traveler is. For those simply seeking a beach resort there are plenty of destinations that are closer and cheaper.

Yet, despite equivalent travel times, countries such as Thailand, China, Japan and Korea are increasingly popular. The Philippines offers world-renown diving, with many first class resorts catering to the scuba crowd. Incredible scenery combined with unique culture and history should draw visitors. Best of all, these attractions are available at bargain-basement prices due to the low value of the peso ($1=app. pp45.) Why do other parts of Asia continue to draw tourism at the expense of the Philippines? Lack of promotion is one of the main problems.

Countries such as Thailand and China heavily advertise their attractions, while The Philippines remains a mystery to most North Americans. It is, however, becoming a popular destination for Australians since the bombings in Bali, and a few Germans and Scandinavians find the dive resorts a welcome respite from northern winters, proving that Americans would head there as well, if properly informed of the many attractions.

Why the apparent lack of interest in developing tourism? This is a complex question with no easy answers. The Philippines is a resource rich nation that remains largely underdeveloped. Thailand, with very similar resources, has built up a world-class tourist industry (unfortunately suffering due to recent political problems,) is a major exporter of rice, and an important supplier of fruit, fish and seafood. The Philippines suffers from massive poverty, largely a result of a series of corrupt governments. Politicians have more interest in lining their own pockets than in improving conditions for their fellow countrymen. Fortunately there is now a ray of hope with the election of “Noynoy” Aquino from one of the most respected political families. He has vowed to fight corruption and put the country back on course. Unfortunately, even if he is successful, significant change is years away.

The perception that the Philippines is unsafe remains another deterrent to tourism. How unsafe is it really? Violent crime against foreigners is very rare. Years ago there were a few kidnappings, but this is a thing of the past. Other types of non-violent crime are a risk for the unwary. Pick-pockets ply their craft on public transit and other crowded areas. Offers from strangers to share drinks, or accompany them anywhere should be avoided. The rule when traveling here is the same as elsewhere, do your homework. In any part of the world some areas are safe, and others not so much. A good guide-book will help in avoiding risky areas, but when in doubt ask for advice at your hotel, or from your travel agent.

Filipinos are generally friendly, cheerful, and welcoming. The Philippines offers a highly rewarding travel experience to those willing to try something a little different, and is less costly, while being no less safe than other Asian destinations.

Caffeinated Content

Tim Zelmer asked:

There was a time, fairly early in its history, when the Internet was an almost purely social place for most of us. Shortly after it became popular, the average person connected through America Online (AOL) or CompuServe and paid by the minute to enter chat rooms and meet new people. Most of us were wary of the people we met online at first – the anonymity offered online brought out the worst in many of people during the early days when the idea of communicating with people via the Internet was new. However, the bad experiences that were had by some were vastly outweighed by the convenience, the uniqueness and the sheer fun offered by those simple chat rooms of the past.

No one – not even the Internet pioneers – could have predicted how fast the Internet would grow, and how much a part of virtually everyone’s daily life it would become. From the humble beginnings of those early chat rooms, the Internet has become a tool that most of us use to do business, stay in touch with family and friends, get news, sports and weather reports, directions and maps, buy and sell things – you name it, the odds are very good that the Internet offers you a way to do it. The amount of information available on the “information hi-way” is staggering – a simple search on Google or Yahoo can net literally millions of matching sites – and if you can buy something in a brick and mortar store, you can more than likely buy it from your PC or laptop.

Interestingly, in some ways the Internet has come full circle in that along with the other things we do online on a day-to-day basis, many people are now finding that dating online – meeting new people to form relationships with – offers them options that the bar scene, blind dates, fix-ups and other traditional ways of forming romantic relationships simply don’t. The recent explosion of online dating and online dating sites has created a situation in which proximity is no longer the deciding factor in who a person can meet. Rather than being confined to a single town or city, Internet dating offers people the option of looking for that perfect someone across the state, the country and even all across the world.

Not only has the online dating industry exploded in recent years but it has become both more user friendly and relationship specific. No matter who you are or what sort of relationship you are looking for, the odds are that there is a site out there that will fit your needs. There are sites that cater to straight dating, the gay/lesbian community, ethnically based dating (white, black, Asian, etc), bi-sexual and *********** relationships, dating based on religion, political views, ages (under 30 or over 50, etc) and pretty much any and all combinations of the previously mentioned groups. There are sites that will try and find the perfect match for you, and sites that will simply offer thousands (and in some cases tens of thousands) of user profiles and pictures for you to search through. Some sites offer only simple email introductions while other sites will offer instant messaging, private chat rooms, streaming audio, and live video capabilities all administered through the site. It only takes the investment of an hour or two of your time to find an online dating service which caters to your specific needs and desires.

While online dating certainly isn’t going to appeal to everyone, there can be no doubt that the industry’s rapid growth and expansion indicates that more and more men and women are finding it to be not only a viable but a preferable alternative to traditional forms of dating. As a matter of fact, an increasing number of men and women are finding that there are many advantages to looking for romantic companionship online. Some of these advantages include:

* Safety – There is no doubt about it, the world in general and the dating world in particular can be a dangerous place for both men and women. While a person may look or seem to be okay, it takes a considerable amount of time to really get to know anyone. Many people find that getting to know another person online – where they have control over both how much personal information they give about themselves and how much information they ask of another person – alleviates most of their safety concerns. No reputable online dating site will give out your personal information (last name, address, phone number or even email address) without your permission. It is up to the user(s) how fast or how slow a relationship progresses and, should one person have suspicions or fears about their online dating partner, ending the relationship is as simple as clicking out of the chat box or instant message.

* Convenience – For most of us, traditional dating is WORK. Whether male or female, it takes a considerable amount of time to get that look you want perfect, pick out the right wardrobe, find the right place to go, etc. The truth is, in today’s hectic world, a lot of people simply don’t have the time to do everything that they need to do to get ready for a date on a regular basis. Online dating, however, is as simple as switching on a computer and logging into your dating site. Even if you use a site that offers webcam functions, you control whether you turn the cam on, and even if it shows anything other than your smile. The impression you make on the people you are interested in can be made in ripped jeans and an old tee shirt – you don’t even need to comb your hair.

* Variety – One of the most common complaints that people in the dating scene have is that they always seem to meet the same kind of people. A lot of this is, of course, due to the fact that in many cases people from the same towns or cities tend to share many of the same personality traits. This is not the case in the online dating world. You can just as easily strike up a conversation with a girl in Kiev or a guy in Manila as you can with your next door neighbor, and this offers a wide variety of people that simply isn’t available with any other form of dating.

* Cost – Love may be blind, but finding it by traditional dating methods certainly isn’t cheap. A first date with someone you may not even know or actually be compatible with can easily run $200 or more, and there is never a guarantee that you will even enjoy yourself or want to see that person again. While virtually all online dating sites charge fees for their services, in many cases the cost of that first traditional, three hour date will buy you weeks – and even months – of online dating with a variety of people who catch your attention. And again, if you find that someone simply isn’t what you are looking for, you can simply say goodbye and try someone else … without having to pay for a cab to take them home!

As I said before, online dating isn’t for everyone – and not every approach to online dating offered by specific sites will be right for everyone. But with the almost unlimited options available and the wide variety of choices that can be explored from the comfort of one’s own home, online dating is something that should at least be looked into by anyone who is in search of that perfect someone. The one you’ve been looking for could be as near as the next chat room!

Valuenotes Outsourcing Practice asked:

Over the last few years, the Philippines has been increasingly gaining traction as an offshoring destination, especially in niches like call centers, medical transcription, animation, publishing and legal services.

ValueNotes has been researching and analyzing the Indian publishing offshoring industry since 2005. With over 100 service providers, some of them with decades of experience, the Indian publishing offshoring industry is quite mature. While India commands a lion’s share in publishing outsourcing, especially in the STM (scientific, technical and medical) segment, service providers in countries like Philippines and China have been around for quite some time.

We estimate the revenues of Publishing BPO industry to be approximately $100 m in 2008. Among the 20-25 vendors, SPi Global Solutions, Innodata Isogen and Asiatype Inc. have been the early movers and have been in existence for two decades or more.

All these service providers have a strong focus on STM (Scientific, Technical and Medical) publishers, and are now beginning to look at the educational and/or corporate publishing segments. These early entrants have positioned themselves as ‘end-to-end service providers’ to the publishing industry. Most large and mid-sized players in the Philippines have been growing at approximately 20-30% per year for the last couple of years.

While publishing BPO industry in the Philippines and India began at the same time, there is a huge difference in their growth patterns. The Philippines industry is approximately one fifths of that of the Indian publishing BPO in terms of manpower. The two leading Philippines players are comparable to the leading Indian players. SPi with an over 5,000 strong workforce in the Philippines is one of the largest publishing BPOs in the world!

However, while almost 80% of the Indian revenues are contributed by the top 10-12 vendors; in the Philippines top 2 vendors comprise 80% of the total revenues. The Philippines vendor landscape is marked by an absence of a strong mid tier (200-500 employees). Apart from Xlibris (captive), Affinity Express, Asiatype and few others, there are very few companies in the mid tier vis-à-vis over 80-100 vendors in that space in India.

On the skills front, India has developed tremendous capabilities in automation and technology. While attributes like cultural proximity to the US, design and copy-editing skills are some of the strong capabilities within Philippines, there is a need to rise to the next level. There is currently an underdeveloped mid tier vendor landscape in the Philippines. Several of these mid-tier companies are subcontractors to the industry leaders. In order to capture the huge opportunity in publishing outsourcing, it is imperative for these Philippines BPOs to build differentiators in their service offerings.
